WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GI AND NO-GI CLASSES?

In Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), the main difference between Gi and No-Gi classes comes down to what you wear and how techniques are applied.

1. Gi BJJ

   •    Uniform: Students wear a Gi (kimono) including a jacket, pants, and belt.

   •    Grip-based techniques: The Gi allows you to grab your opponent’s collar, sleeves, and pants to control them, execute sweeps, or submit them.

   •    Slower, more technical pace: Grips allow for precise control, giving students time to focus on strategy and technique.

   •    Traditional focus: Emphasis on leverage, positional control, and classical BJJ fundamentals.

   •    Typical submissions: Collar chokes, sleeve chokes, and other Gi-specific techniques.

2. No-Gi BJJ

   •    Uniform: Shorts and a rash guard (tight athletic shirt), with no jacket to grab.

   •    Limited grips: Relies on underhooks, overhooks, wrist control, and body positioning.

   •    Faster pace: Without Gi grips, opponents can slip away more easily, creating a faster and more athletic game.

   •    Focus on wrestling and pressure: Emphasizes speed, explosiveness, and functional control. Techniques often borrow from wrestling and submission grappling.

   •    Typical submissions: Rear-naked chokes, guillotine chokes, leg locks, and armbars that don’t rely on clothing.

Tip: Training both Gi and No-Gi develops a well-rounded skill set, combining traditional technique with athletic, modern grappling strategies.

⸻

WHAT SHOULD I BRING FOR MY FREE TRIAL CLASS?

   •    Clothing: Athletic clothing (no jeans). Loaner Gi’s are available for first-time students.

   •    Hydration: Bring a water bottle – we have a refill station on-site.

   •    Footwear: Flip-flops for use in lounge areas and bathrooms/change rooms.
